The exact place where it was invented to bake tortillas is unknown. It happened because flatbread began to be cooked everywhere almost simultaneously. That is, different peoples of the world discovered this type of baking for themselves in the same time period.
Later, tortillas began to become a more sophisticated dish. From them, the bread familiar to most people was born. However, in Eastern and Asian countries, the concept of baking traditional flatbread still remains.
Let’s try to recreate a delicious oriental flatbread at home.
Ingredients for flatbread:
- kefir – 300 ml;
- butter – 70 g;
- salt – tsp;
- sugar – 2 tsp;
- baking soda – ½ tsp;
- flour – 550 g.
Preparation of flatbread:
Warm the kefir slightly to just above room temperature. Pour salt and granulated sugar into the kefir, whisk until the grains of sand dissolve.
Pour baking soda into the kefir, stir. Sift ⅔ part of the flour into the kefir, knead the dough with a spoon. Then add soft butter, knead with your hands.
Pour the rest of the flour into the dough, continue kneading elastic soft dough. Divide the dough into 8-10 rolls.
With a rolling pin roll out each dough piece into a thin layer 2 mm thick, make a flatbread according to the diameter of the frying pan. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan and place the flatbread on the bottom.
Sprinkle oil on top of the flatbread to form bubbles.
Fry the flatbread on both sides until golden. Fry the rest of the tortillas in the same way.
The dough of these flatbreads turns out tender and soft. You can serve these flatbreads with kebabs, soups or for breakfast.
