Potato casserole was one of the main peasant dishes in many European countries. In the nineteenth century, in times of various economic instabilities, people could not afford to buy meat or fish.
For this reason, many people ate exclusively fruits and vegetables. It was necessary to invent new dishes that could replace meat dishes. One of these dishes was potato casserole.
We will tell you how you can deliciously prepare potato casserole in French style.
Ingredients of French-style potatoes:
- potatoes – kg;
- cream 10% – 400 ml;
- butter – 60 g
- cheese – 40 g
- garlic – 2 cloves;
- Provencal herbs – ¼ tsp;
- nutmeg – ½ tsp;
- salt – ½ tsp.
Preparing French-style potatoes:
Peel the potatoes and cut into thin slices, no more than 2 mm thick.
In a separate bowl, combine the softened butter with the Provencal herbs. Squeeze garlic cloves into the butter and stir.
½ of the
butter and spices into the bottom of the mold, grease the surface and walls. Place potato slices on the bottom of the mold overlapping in a circle.
Salt the first layer of potatoes and sprinkle with nutmeg. Pour ⅓ of the cream over the first layer of potatoes
. Similarly lay the remaining couple of layers of potato slices, pouring cream over each one. Brush
the top of the potato casserole with butter and spices and then pour the rest of the cream
.
Bake the potatoes in the oven at 190 degrees for 50 minutes.
Shred cheese on a coarse grater, sprinkle over the prepared potato casserole.
Send the casserole for 5 minutes at 200 degrees in the oven.
This dish can be a separate dish or a side dish to meat.
