Salads began to appear at celebrations quite a long time ago. However, in ancient times, this dish was not as hearty as it is now. The fact is that salads were prepared from the simplest ingredients – herbs, onions and salt. The main component of salads was salt, which gave a special salty flavor to the dish. Since salt was expensive in ancient times, not everyone could afford vegetable salads. Therefore, salad was an elitist dish.
In the modern world, salad has become more difficult to prepare, but everyone can make it. The paradox is that the ingredients for the salad have become more accessible.
