Salads were a very expensive dish in ancient times. However, they were made of only herbs and onions. What was the costliness of ancient salads?
We should start from the word salad. In translation from ancient Roman salad means salty. In BC times, salt was very difficult to extract. For this reason, the price of salt was high. Only rich people could afford it.
Salads had to be salted. Otherwise it was not considered a complete dish. Therefore, salads were expensive – because of the main ingredient, i.e. salt
. Now everything has changed. You can make a delicious budget salad.
Ingredients for the salad:
- Beets – 3 pcs;
- Mayonnaise – 3 tablespoons;
- Pepper – a pinch;
- Paprika – ⅓ tsp;
- Salt – ½ tsp;
- Garlic – 5 cloves;
- Raisins – 2 tbsp;
- Carrots – pcs;
- Cheese – 50 g;
- Prunes – 100 g;
- Walnuts – 50 g.
Preparation of the salad:
Boil or bake beets until ready. You can rinse the beets and cover in a plate with food film. Send the beets to the microwave to bake for 15 minutes.
In a bowl with mayonnaise pour salt, paprika and ground black pepper. Put 3 garlic cloves through a press into the mayonnaise.
Pour water over the raisins and let them swell in advance, transfer them to the bowl with mayonnaise.
Grate the peeled carrots on a Korean or coarse grater, add them to the mayonnaise, mix all the components.
Put the carrot layer into a pastry ring. Grate cheese on a coarse grater, you can also shred it with a knife.
Put the cheese on the carrot layer. Chop soft prunes finely, either dried or swollen. Put the chopped prunes on the cheese layer, cover with a mayonnaise mesh. Shred

Sprinkle the beets with salt, pepper and paprika, put the remaining garlic through the press. Fill
the beet
mixture with mayonnaise
. Place the beet mixture on the layer of prunes, distribute evenly. Chop walnuts with a knife and pour them on the beet layer.
This salad does not need to insist in the refrigerator. It can be served immediately after cooking.
